Nonprofit Spotlight: Red Feather Ranch

Red Feather Ranch is our latest nonprofit spotlight. Each June brings the recognition of Women Veterans Day as well as PTSD Awareness. Fittingly, Red Feather Ranch brings Women Veterans together to heal traumas through connection with nature and community. For the month of June, a portion of all purchases made in the Lady Vet Shop will be donated directly to Red Feather Ranch. We hope you’ll join us in support of their valuable work for Women Veterans.

HEALING THROUGH CONNECTION

Trauma comes in many forms. For women Veterans, it may be due to challenges reintegrating into civilian life after service. It could be PTSD related to combat or military sexual trauma. It could also be something they experienced in life before the military. Red Feather Ranch was created to help Women Veterans heal from trauma regardless of origin.

It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that embraces a variety of evidence-based holistic and trauma-informed approaches to promote the healing of Women Veterans. They believe in helping women reconnect to their authentic selves through earth-based practices in a supportive community of sister Veterans.

The Red Feather approach to healing includes the concept of regenerative resilience. It’s a belief that fortunate and unfortunate events and experiences can become transformational gifts toward our higher good, and we can create new stories at any time without forgetting the old ones.

“We believe that we can heal our trauma through building a connection with the land and our community.”

-Red Feather Ranch

BEGINNINGS

Red Feather Ranch was founded by Navy Veteran Paige Jenkins. She has a master’s degree in social work, and a deep background in serving the needs of Women Veterans. Paige is dedicated to trauma recovery and sustainable living through science, creative thinking, and ancient knowledge and practices. She is committed to addressing the proliferating concerns of this generation and beyond, one Woman Veteran at a time.

There is also a special meaning behind the organization’s name. In 2013, Paige attended the first Native American Veterans Summit in Grand Ronde, Oregon. There, she witnessed a wounded warrior ceremony honoring veterans who had been wounded in the military. Several men from multiple war eras were given red eagle feathers to acknowledge their injuries. The last person called up to receive a feather was Linda Woods. She was an Air Force Veteran, MSW, AnishnaabeKwe Elder, and eagle staff carrier. Linda was presented with a feather to acknowledge her wound from military sexual trauma.

This ceremonial acknowledgment became the symbol for Red Feather Ranch. It was designed to be a place to honor and provide healing from the hidden wounds of war.
